Hi there,

I've been having an issue with AF and iTunes. When I doubleclick an audio file from within the AudioFinder browser, it opens in iTunes, rather than the AF sample editor. Is there a fix for this that's been documented? Ideally, I'd like to keep iTunes as my default program for playing files through Finder.

Thanks!

Hi Iced Audio,

most of the time, I manage my files by scanning the library and not by using meta data. I really like the feature of using lists for files I want to use in future projects.
But when I rename a file inside audiofinder, it will be lost in the associated list. This is inconvenient. Am I doing everything wright? I can not imagine that a program like audiofinder, which is meant to manage files looses its own information. For me, it should give the information of a new name to the lists too. Or is there a possibility to rescan the lists too?
best, stefan

I use audioFinder every day, it's helped me out tremendously with my workflow. As a game sound designer it's very useful to be able to quickly find sfx needed in my inventory, but I do have a few requests that I think will help out us sound designers a lot.

1) Every time we make a selection in the "audio quick look" and want to drop it on the time line we have to press the "spot" button, any shortcut?
2) After making the selection and putting it on the timeline, I notice that audioFinder creates a "clip". This is particularly annoying if you're working on a server and it creates clips on that server. What we'd like is to put those clips somewhere else locally, caché these and then dump them when audioFinder is closed. ProTools already imports the file, I understand some people might find it useful, give us the option at least?
3) Automatic scan new items - not sure if there is an easy way to do this, but we go out and record new content all the time, bring them back in, edit them put them on the network and we have to rescan our entire library, which takes hours to do; there needs to be an easier way to do this.
4) (This ties in with the previous point) when we delete an item off the server the metadata search still finds these and thinks they are offline or something, we've tried rescanning the library but they still appear - and can't delete these manually either - threw audioFinder.

These features would help us out tremendously, anyone else feels the same way?

I really want to use AudioFinder but I find that the overall usability to be awkward and frankly kind of old-school. I think that the biggest area of weirdness is with the library. Even after reading the manual and attempting a dozen different times to get everything set up I still find myself struggling to get a natural workflow out of it. I mean, scan vs import, these differ how exactly? And why do I have to keep rebuilding my main library? I think you should take some cue's from how iTunes is structured, it's simple and it works. The Main Library should be everything, dozens of sub-libraries:

Main Library
--- Sub-Library 1
--- Sub-Library 2
--- Etc.

When you click on the Main Library, it should search everything you have, all sub-libraries, if you pick a sub-library it should narrow the search to just the sub-library. I should be able to just drag and drop a new folder from finder on the Main Library and have it import all of the meta data into a new sub-library or directly into the main-library. That's it, there shouldn't be a scan vs. and import with all of that confusion. Just one big library with all of my stuff indexed, that's what we want in the end right? To be able to jump into the app, go to the search box and type in "Bass line" and get an instant result, then flip through the results and get a playback.

I do really like the audio file viewer/player. I think it's the best out there right now with Snapper by Audioease being the next in line. I just wish this was iTunes' database simplicity + your Viewer

Maybe version 6?

However, I have one problem that keeps coming up:

Would it be possible to list the Library Scans in their own collapsible menu? I can't count the number of times I have accidentally clicked on a scan and started a scan process when what I wanted was to click on a List to do a search. This mostly seems to be a problem for me because the Scans are placed above the Lists in the Library menu and are the first thing I see.

I suppose this is a pretty minor thing, especially if I'm the only one who has the problem, but it would be lovely to see it adjusted in a way that won't have me facepalming every couple of days.

Thanks for listening.

Hi iced,

As always I'm a huge fan of your software and its become near dispensable for me. Anyway, I'm also a huge fan of hardware samplers and I have a feature request that would make things a little bit easier for me.

I like to preview sounds in audiofinder, then sample them out to one of my samplers. The problem is that Audiofinder only sends audio to the default or main outputs of whatever soundcard is being used. My 828mkII has 8 analog outputs, of which 5 are hooked up to samplers (two stereo and one mono). It would be a huge help to me if I could select the audio outputs that audiofinder will use.
-------------------------------------

And also another small annoyance, when I use audiofinder to browse my MPC1000's hard drive (connected via USB), audiofinder will not 'release' the hard drive so that it can be unmounted. The OS complains that the drive cannot be ejected since it is currently in use. Is there any way to fix that?

Hi there -

I use the Quicklook window of AudioFinder as a handy way to see sample rate/bit depth/format of files in the finder, and in fact it's pretty much all I use Audiofinder for. So Audiofinder is always in 'detached' mode for me. It seems that the Quicklook window always defaults to 'top' being on which is annoying in my workflow since if I select an audio file in the finder, Quicklook pops up as desired, but then stays in front of whatever application I move to until I either turn 'top' off, or go back to the finder and select a non-audio file; this is of course very inconvenient. I can turn 'top' off but it only stays that way until the next time I have to reboot. Is there any way to set it as a preference to *not* be in 'top' mode?

Thanks!
Rich Breen

Hi Iced - I'm new to AudioFinder & this forum, but so far AF has been a huge help to my workflow - many thanks!

However, I'm having trouble working with tags/metadata with multiple files selected. It seems like whenever I select multiple files, Audiofinder defaults to displaying "Multiple Values" for all fields, even if the files in question contain the same metadata for any particular field. For instance, if I select three files that are all 80BPM, I'd expect to be able to see this info represented in the BPM field, but it's not. Likewise, if I select 3 files that are all tagged "Action" and "Suspense", I would expect to be able to see these tags represented and be able to append/unappend tags from all of them, but again, AF simply displays "Multiple Values". Is the functionality that I'm after possible?

Let me know if you need me to clarify anything, and thanks in advance.
-Sam

Whilst trying out the reported bug from this post I realised that the way AF splits stereo files is quite counter intuitive:

AF splits interleaved files from "filename.wav" into "filename 00001.wav" and "filename00002.wav". These files are not generally recognised as split stereo files (by anything other than maybe AF itself).

Snapper on the other hand just splits the files from "filename.wav" into "filename.L" and "filename.R" - the same way Pro Tools does. I would prefer if AF did it the same way.

The same is true for combining split stereo files to interleaved files - the combined file created from "FILENAME.L.wav" & "FILENAME.R.wav" is "FILENAME.L 0001.wav"
It would be a lot easier to just call it "FILENAME.wav" Again, this is the way Pro Tools works (and Snapper follows).

I agree with the poster in the the thread above that it would be beneficial if AF recognised split stereo files from the fact that they are called the same with a .L and .R respectively.

This is my biggest feature request (with rewire close behind I think :-) ) because it is the only bottleneck in my workflow.
I find it hard to believe that no one has built a decent midi preview app. Live and Logic can't do it. Placing midi files into Logic's take folders isn't feasible either (files have to be dragged onto a track from the browser one at a time, then placed into a folder in which they lose their names. Adding further files to this folder and making it accessible is a pain). Rondo (http://www.fracturedsoftware.com) almost succeeds but the need to preview files in loop mode is essential. When loop is enabled in Rondo's playlist playback isn't seamless. Sweet MIDI (http://www.ronimusic.com) does loop files seamlessly but won't allow you to keep the loop button on when using it's playlist (you have to turn jukebox off, turn loop on, turn jukebox back on and blah blah...). I'd be embarrassed if I developed EZPlayer Pro (http://www.toontrack.com). Major sync issues in Logic and it requires clicking on each new midi file with the mouse (arrow keys don't work). I can't find any other apps that come close. Seems to me there's a gap in the market (I'm not sure if other DAW's can do it).
With it's previewing and tagging system AudioFinder is well set up. Only problem I've noticed is that (like Rondo) it stutters when loop is on. Rectify the stutter, add an option to send midi to IAC instead of Quicktime, add tempo and transpose controls and it'd be perfect!
(I could live without the tempo and transpose).

I would happily make a large donation (more than I paid for for AF) if this was implemented and I think it could possibly be a big selling point.

Cheers
Ray

Hi,

I just discovered how I can use AF to set loop points and create loop crossfades, and I have one feture request that would make this perfect for me: The ability to preview what the crossfade will sound like in order to make decisions on what will be the best and smoothest sounding crossfade time, and also how e crossfade is affected by moving the loop start end end points.

I'm generally using this kind of loops with long sound files (several minutes) based on field recordings (hence containing more noise-based sound than pitched sounds) and used for sound installations so the use of loops, and the best way of tweeking them, differs somewhat as compared to the regular Abelton Live kind of use of loops.

Thanks for considering it!

Trond

Hello, I have just started using AF (last version) and I find it very smart! However, I am facing an issue and I really need to solve this problem: I am tagging thousands of samples and, very often, I need multi tags at the same time (ie 1000 loops with drum, loop, electronic, processed tags). Well, when I push the first tag it starts tagging the whole lot and I have to wait several minutes before going further onto the next tag..I have tried to do that using the tags set-up but when I press OK it does not do the job! Am I missing something? Is there some kind of shortcut? Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks
Eddy

I wish to use Meldaproductions MAnalyser or Blue cat FreqAnalyst both AU plugins but they prevent audio from being played and nothing is displayed. I know AudioFinder has some great analysis feature but these plugins are quite useful. Is there a reason or am I doing something wrong? I did search on the subject and looked on the manual but did not turn anything up. Hope you can help

Many thanks

Simon

It continues to process audio. Bit annoying but I can get around it by changing channels inside Kore (it can parallel process) to a dry channel. All other plugins tested seem to work okay. Just thought you may like to know in case it's something obvious/easy to fix. I'm guessing it's probably not though.

Cheers.

Eg. it does '#57 A4liquid.rx2' instead of "#57 A4 liquid.rx2".
I'm assuming it should be the latter? It would be very helpful if it was (if for no other reason than readability). Note number and key at the start of a file is useful sometimes but I find for me most of the time I want the info at the end eg. 'liquid #57 A4.rx2'. When the info is at the start it disrupts viewing of files as groups when they're sorted by name. I'm trying to batch rename files to swap the info to the end but not having that space there makes it difficult to do so.

Alternatively feel free to add a 'suffix' option. Same goes for BPM too. :-)

Cheers

Hello - just wondered whether it is possible to share my library. I've networked my sample library and hoping to collaborate with my partner on another computer on a single shared view of the 'studio' Main library in Audiofinder. Any advice would be gratefully recieved. Many thanks

Nick
