I can drag a 5.1 audio file into a 5.1 audio track in Pro Tools, but I can not drag 6 discrete audio files(from a 5.1 recorded file) into a 5.1 audio track.
Does my explanation make sense? If yes, is there a way around it?
Most likely, it has to do with the way the files are named. it has to be like this:
xxxx.L.aif or .wav for ex. xxxx.R.aif xxxx.C.aif xxxx.Ls.aif xxxx.Rs.aif xxxx.LFE.aif
Maybe another format will work for the channel, but I know for sure than certain formats will not allow you to drop them into a 5.1 track. (for ex. -(L).aif -(R).aif -S(L).aif,... will not work).
Which bring me to a feature request:
Would it be possible to create a 5.1 file within AF the same way that we can create a Stereo track?
Audiofinder should be able to recognize splitted stereo/quad/5.1/7.1 files by their filenames as a unique entity... This is something i asked years ago :-) . The file extensions are "normalized" for a long time, now. Stereo : .L.wav/.R.wav Quad : L/R/Ls/Rs 5.1 : L/R/C/LFE/Ls/Rs 7.1 : L/R/C/LFE/Lsr/Rsr/Lss/Rss
There are even metadatas defining the channellayout (iXML).
Soundminer or TwistedWave do this just fine for years, and it's absolutely necessary for surround works IMHO.
