I don't know if this has been submitted already, but it would be a nice little addition, as for now I have to either copy and paste or re-write my search in the search bar when switching between libraries.
It would be a great addition for sure. Also, I am not sure if you saw that, but I just posted in another thread regarding 5.1 files. You were asking for some help in testing. I will gladly help you with that as I work a lot with 5.1 files.
also a key stroke to "focus" keyboard input to favorite library's - could have self assigned keystrokes..
and a keystroke to focus on search field - search not workign? need to imput some new text.
here's my day in the studio,
in DAW drag edit edit drag drag edit//
oooh! need sound.
apple tab to AF
mouse to select library..
enter search - audition.. ( oops wrong library - or need to try another library -) ( preserve last search when selceting new library - maybe text is highlighted so can change all easily? )
* audition sound
( * would be nice if that could chop any silence off start of sample - yeah yeah I know I could trim all of my 100,000 + sounds - but then I would have to check them or something = who has time to do this? )
hmm sound ok ?
drag sound back to DAW ( shame its not logic or Protools )
sound not ok?
click new libry - scroll to the pull down - select item 7 ( thats the last search )
( preserve last search when selceting new library - maybe text is highlighted so can change all easily? )
sound ok?
drag sound back to DAW ( shame its not logic or Protools )
repeat ad infinitum...
occasional pitch shift/ AU process - which may add a variation..
oh dear its in column view - now have to switch to the finder. select output folder - change to mod date.. processed file is the latest - drag that to DAW
since this is basically all I do ( most of the time! - streamlining of this would be gratefully appreciated! )
Changed it so it will not reset under the following conditions: 1. You are going between Save Lists or Saved Searches 2. You have only one level of search and did not use Refine.
thanks for the "don't reset search" in 5.5.5. That's great!
Also, Martian add a good idea with the either "automatic" update/scan of a folder/library or maybe just a "scan library" option when right clicking on a library folder, on the side bar. A little addition that would make it quick and easy, as we constantly ad sounds to our libraries.
Also, to go back to another thread we had a while back, let me know if you need some help in testing stuff for more 5.1/surround implementation in the AF. I 'll be happy to help.
an update scan would be great... ( yes I like the right click Huugy! )
or if AF could make a scan automatically and invisibly for any folder that we drag into the sidebar... and we can either right click to *force* update or if you could have a background or overnight scan is awesome..
for me too I'm always finding /creating.. and yes I'd like to be more organised - how ever I face the reality that I dont have enough time! or brain power..
so I might rememebr somethign from an old project - or I make scans for projects.. and my library has evolved rather chaotically..
ideally I would just go thru and re-organise - but its sort of a mommoth job and I sort of know where stuff is now anyways?
Are we talking about saved Lists (previously called Libraries) ? They can't auto update because they are not linked to any source. They are simple playlists, like in iTunes. You can make them by saving a scan, saving a search, or creating an empty list and manually dragging stuff into them. They are not connected to scans or folders.
yes a bookmark folder that acts as a scan... ( would also preserve last search too! )
and all folders below it in the file structure.. of course we realise that this might take processing time.. so can either be scheduled ( over night) for instance.. or a right click..
so If I start to re-organise ( i do a bit ) then I'm not penalised for it..
I think me and huggy are going after the same thing... sort of?
right now the situation is I have a scan of my library - which is structured chaotically... ( ie projects give birth to sounds... and some of these projects go back to the 90's...
new projects spawn new sounds... the best I can do is to label them - or just become a fulltime librarian and forget about the other job!
I do try tho.. but like I say if I move stuff then it ruins the "global scan" ) ( main library?)
so I am constantly switching between different scans and bookmarked folders as my aging brain struggles to recall where it was *that* sound *is*...
my files are all labelled tag style in the finder..
spotlight just keeps stopping workinig - I fixed a few times over the last years - but it just keeps stoppign
it may be that the answer I need is already implemented? i thought scan setups was close.. maybe I need to take another look at it? for some reason I havent used that as much as I thought..
any suggestions?
I know for sure that being able to jump thru searches ( ie the text you entered) and apply it to the current scan would be great!
alright, well, that's what Scan Sets are for. Auto scanning folders, but perhaps the user interface is too cumbersome to use? So I just made a version that is really simple.
Select the folders in the List view which you want to auto scan (1 or more) Then from the Context Menu or Library Menu select "Make Scan Set" This will auto create a Scan Set in the Sidebar with the folders you selected and will scan each time you click it.
Can you make a screen recording? A scan set is a live scan of the contents. Do not save a List of the scan set. Have it scan each time you click on it.
i thnk what was putting me off using it on a daily basis was saving the list as a scan... and then dragging it to where I want it... and you have to do that each time it updates ( i almost never have the "library" open - its just full of who knows what...
ideally it would buffer that scan, so as to be usable until we decide it needs updating?
and then simply right clicking would update it?
I have made a movie..
it may be a bit boring.. I should have recorded VO maybe?!
anyways you can see how I organise my stuff...
( maybe from 30 secs is better :p )
generally I have a bookmark to a folder with interesting stuff in...
and I have placed below that a scan of that area
yes I could probably do with a clean up - sorry for the mess.
( also I generally have the quick view window on a 2nd monitor - but dragged it over here for some reason during the recording )
AudioFinder only knows what on disk when it scans, it has to read the disk to see what's there. There's not some magic OS X feature that tells an application that while it was not running someone added files to the following folders.
Imagine this. You save a list and it's current with what's on disk. You quit AudioFinder and do other stuff. Then you add files to the folder which the list is based on. Then you run AudioFinder. How does AudioFinder know the folder contents have changed without scanning? It can't, it has to scan to know the contents changed. That's why I created Scan Sets initially to address this chicken and the egg problem.
but what I'm getting at is that a scan set is just a "live" thing.
a scan is a saved version..
we cant move a scan set .. ( unless its saved - then its just a scan.. )
so basically would be great be able to "move" a scan set to a bookmark folder.., and it should "store" the list it generated when it was last run - so we can search it *instantly*
and still be right clickable - to update that list - after all we *do* know when it needs to be updated,,
that means we can move things around our library and not be penalised and forced into manual labor of deleting now out of date scans...
running the scan set..
saving that scan set search result as a scan..
dragging that scan back into our ordered work environment
re colour coding - or adding icon.
( I will have to investigate what a group is... )
more mixing today - but may involve a bit of SFX replacement as its a chinese cartoon series -
yes thanks! I would find it useful... basically the "library " gets full of stuff and is not so flexible in organisation.
( really must find time to try and re-organise )
also if you could have a menu item for "update all scansets now " that you could activate before lunch or leaving the studio - since some of the scans can take a while.....
must also try and make you some icons..
( search foldername , file name, exact match. bypass processing folder , and a few others for the cutomisable menu )
