Feature Request: Search Bar should not reset when changing Libraries
  • I don't know if this has been submitted already, but it would be a nice little addition, as for now I have to either copy and paste or re-write my search in the search bar when switching between libraries.

    Thanks!
  • Hmmm. I'll look into it...
  • been asked for a few times in the past :p
  • Yes. I may do this, it's a bit tricky to do for technical reasons.
  • It would be a great addition for sure. Also, I am not sure if you saw that, but I just posted in another thread regarding 5.1 files. You were asking for some help in testing. I will gladly help you with that as I work a lot with 5.1 files.
  • it would be an awesome addition!

basically I end up pulling down that triangle a million times a day..

is my heavy&&whoosh in this library. opps no.. ah i think its here... err ...

    how about the fast&&down&&stairs&&wood

    yeah you get the idea!

you might be keen on my other suggestion?

where we can see whether file name or folder name or whole word match is activated..

a key stroke to those would be awesome too.. :)

mousing is soooooo slow - hand off keybaord - pick up mouse.. hand off mouse - back to keyboard..

    slow slow slow! :p

ps what happened to the smilies? i sound like a right grumpy barstool!

  • also a key stroke to "focus" keyboard input to favorite library's - could have self assigned keystrokes..

and a keystroke to focus on search field - search not workign? need to imput some new text.

here's my day in the studio,

in DAW drag edit edit drag drag edit//

    oooh! need sound.

    apple tab to AF

    mouse to select library..

enter search - audition.. ( oops wrong library - or need to try another library -)
( preserve last search when selceting new library - maybe text is highlighted so can change all easily? )

    * audition sound

( * would be nice if that could chop any silence off start of sample - yeah yeah I know I could trim all of my 100,000 + sounds - but then I would have to check them or something = who has time to do this? )

    hmm sound ok ?

drag sound back to DAW ( shame its not logic or Protools )

    sound not ok?

click new libry - scroll to the pull down - select item 7 ( thats the last search )

( preserve last search when selceting new library - maybe text is highlighted so can change all easily? )

    sound ok?

drag sound back to DAW ( shame its not logic or Protools )

    repeat ad infinitum...

occasional pitch shift/ AU process - which may add a variation..

oh dear its in column view - now have to switch to the finder. select output folder - change to mod date.. processed file is the latest - drag that to DAW

since this is basically all I do ( most of the time! - streamlining of this would be gratefully appreciated! )

  • The way it works now is based on what Finder does when you have a search and change sources. I'll definitely look into it...
  • Great. Thanks!

Changed it so it will not reset under the following conditions:
    1. You are going between Save Lists or Saved Searches
    2. You have only one level of search and did not use Refine.
  • awesome! thats great on scans thanks!

is it possible to do the same if I click on afolder bookmark as well..

( for instance I have a folder now where I dump all my new recordings and "creations"

this doesnt have a scan- cos I'd be constantly updating )

( or is there a way that it will constantly update a scan? )
  • and it works on complex scans! :)

    big&&fart for example

( sorry working on a cartoon series this week - its making me want to behave like a child! )
  • so happy with this I have got my moth eaten wallet out and hit the Donate button!

    well worth it!

    thanks Iced!

  • any update on the search not being reset when switching between a scan or a folder?

is there a way to make a scan update automatically when adding sounds to a folder?

one thing I wished for yesterday when mixing a motorbike show was to be able hit a key to bring up previous searches... ( like a back button ?)

as I was frequently skipping thru the list with very similair searches all day! ( maybe a back and forward button? )

btw that was show 3 of a 10 part series... *wink*
  • the previous searches are in the search field menu. also, it keeps previous searches in the sidebar as RECENTS
  • Thanks.
  • yes thats true - but just wishing that it could be *faster*

    less mousing around....

hence a feature request for key to skip back to previous next search,,

here's a description of process now..

roll mouse over to side bar- click on library..

roll mouse up to the top,, find and click on the triangle.. pull it down to item 7 6 o7 9... ( they are a bit fiddly I find... )

roll mouse down to the results field click and audition..

    - could be click on library in side bar....

last result shows up.. hit the prev button
you are already mousing to click and autiion whilst doing that,,,,

and if you want to run the search before in there... hitting the previous puts you waaay ahead.

( thinking about the searches we may be doing....

often variations of the same thing... door&&slam door&&close

    truck&&away truck&&pass truck&&approach

often times as a sound editor I will be using similar searches during say a car scene..

    or even a walking scene....

  • ok. let me think about it for 5.5.6. 5.5.5 is going out now to fix some pretty harsh bugs.
  • thanks for the "don't reset search" in 5.5.5. That's great!

Also, Martian add a good idea with the either "automatic" update/scan of a folder/library or maybe just a "scan library" option when right clicking on a library folder, on the side bar. A little addition that would make it quick and easy, as we constantly ad sounds to our libraries.

Also, to go back to another thread we had a while back, let me know if you need some help in testing stuff for more 5.1/surround implementation in the AF. I 'll be happy to help.

You can email me at: audio@ugosound.com

    Cheers!
  • an update scan would be great... ( yes I like the right click Huugy! )

or if AF could make a scan automatically and invisibly for any folder that we drag into the sidebar... and we can either right click to *force* update or if you could have a background or overnight scan is awesome..

for me too I'm always finding /creating.. and yes I'd like to be more organised - how ever I face the reality that I dont have enough time! or brain power..

so I might rememebr somethign from an old project - or I make scans for projects.. and my library has evolved rather chaotically..

ideally I would just go thru and re-organise - but its sort of a mommoth job and I sort of know where stuff is now anyways?
  • Are we talking about saved Lists (previously called Libraries) ? They can't auto update because they are not linked to any source. They are simple playlists, like in iTunes. You can make them by saving a scan, saving a search, or creating an empty list and manually dragging stuff into them. They are not connected to scans or folders.
  • yes, saved lists.

Ok, no auto scan. About a right click that would give us the option(right under "New empty List" & "Save List as"): "Re-scan & Save".

But that may not be possible, based on your reply...
  • i was talking about folders...

I have a folder now where I just dump all new recordings... and that folder lives in my sidebar..

I do label all new recording/creation meticulously tho,,, so they have a lot of searchable tags..

basically is there anyway that folder's content can be a scan? that updates daily ( or as necessary..?

the way now is to make a new scan and throw away the old one?

    Or am I missing something?
  • So you want a Bookmark Folder that does a scan then?
  • mmm. I am getting confused now... Sorry :)

On my end, I am talking about the "Lists" that are created under the "Library" extension in the side bar, using "Save List As".

So either, being able to transform those list into folders, so we can scan them by just an option on a right click, or auto-save as Martian suggested.

    or

Being able to add "Folders" into that "Library" section, so we can scan, etc...

Does that make sense? Martian, are you and I talking about the same thing, I think we are, right?

    Sorry if it is confusing.
  • yes a bookmark folder that acts as a scan... ( would also preserve last search too! )

and all folders below it in the file structure.. of course we realise that this might take processing time.. so can either be scheduled ( over night) for instance.. or a right click..

so If I start to re-organise ( i do a bit ) then I'm not penalised for it..

I think me and huggy are going after the same thing... sort of?

right now the situation is I have a scan of my library - which is structured chaotically... ( ie projects give birth to sounds... and some of these projects go back to the 90's...

new projects spawn new sounds... the best I can do is to label them - or just become a fulltime librarian and forget about the other job!

I do try tho.. but like I say if I move stuff then it ruins the "global scan" ) ( main library?)

so I am constantly switching between different scans and bookmarked folders as my aging brain struggles to recall where it was *that* sound *is*...

my files are all labelled tag style in the finder..

spotlight just keeps stopping workinig - I fixed a few times over the last years - but it just keeps stoppign

it may be that the answer I need is already implemented? i thought scan setups was close.. maybe I need to take another look at it? for some reason I havent used that as much as I thought..

    any suggestions?

I know for sure that being able to jump thru searches ( ie the text you entered) and apply it to the current scan would be great!
  • but marking folders to be scanned and updateable would be great!

especially working on a film project. cos folders can take a long time when you first click on them..

a way to update a folder scan ( film usually has 5 or 6 reels = 5 or 6 projects..

ie master film folder = time and tide

inside creating a project for each reel results in 5 project folders - inside those is usually an audio folder..

each with possibly thousands of files..

you may work on these for 3- 6 weeks... so a daily update would be well handy,,,

great for "stealing" stuff - ie grabbing the sounds from reel 1 to recycle in reel 5...
  • alright, well, that's what Scan Sets are for. Auto scanning folders, but perhaps the user interface is too cumbersome to use? So I just made a version that is really simple.

    http://www.icedaudio.com/beta.zip

Select the folders in the List view which you want to auto scan (1 or more)
Then from the Context Menu or Library Menu select "Make Scan Set"
This will auto create a Scan Set in the Sidebar with the folders you selected and will scan each time you click it.

I think this might make life easier?

  • Cool! I ll download and check it out tomorrow. Thanks!
  • me too! I mixing today so very little SFX searching,,

on other news I just bought myself a Euphonix MC mix...

its great being able to have the faders where you want them!
  • have I got it wrong? :0

so I made a scan set...

that makes a list ? lets call it martian sounds

I drag that list to where it suits me..

later on I drag some sounds into a folder that was inside the scan set..

so theoretically I just righ click on the "martian sounds" list.. and press refresh..

now all new sounds are found and added to the list?

( just tried this and it doesnt work like that )

    is it me? :(
  • Can you make a screen recording? A scan set is a live scan of the contents. Do not save a List of the scan set. Have it scan each time you click on it.
  • ahh I see!

yes it does scan each time... thats fine..

i thnk what was putting me off using it on a daily basis was saving the list as a scan... and then dragging it to where I want it... and you have to do that each time it updates ( i almost never have the "library" open - its just full of who knows what...

ideally it would buffer that scan, so as to be usable until we decide it needs updating?

and then simply right clicking would update it?

    I have made a movie..

it may be a bit boring.. I should have recorded VO maybe?!

anyways you can see how I organise my stuff...

    ( maybe from 30 secs is better :p )

generally I have a bookmark to a folder with interesting stuff in...

and I have placed below that a scan of that area

yes I could probably do with a clean up - sorry for the mess.

( also I generally have the quick view window on a 2nd monitor - but dragged it over here for some reason during the recording )

    not sure which link??!!

  • AudioFinder only knows what on disk when it scans, it has to read the disk to see what's there. There's not some magic OS X feature that tells an application that while it was not running someone added files to the following folders.

Imagine this. You save a list and it's current with what's on disk.
You quit AudioFinder and do other stuff.
Then you add files to the folder which the list is based on.
Then you run AudioFinder. How does AudioFinder know the folder contents have changed without scanning? It can't, it has to scan to know the contents changed. That's why I created Scan Sets initially to address this chicken and the egg problem.

    Does that make sense?

BTW: you can drag a Scan Set into a Group.
  • yep makes sense...

but what I'm getting at is that a scan set is just a "live" thing.

a scan is a saved version..

we cant move a scan set .. ( unless its saved - then its just a scan.. )

so basically would be great be able to "move" a scan set to a bookmark folder..,
and it should "store" the list it generated when it was last run - so we can search it *instantly*

and still be right clickable - to update that list - after all we *do* know when it needs to be updated,,

that means we can move things around our library and not be penalised and forced into manual labor of deleting now out of date scans...

    running the scan set..

saving that scan set search result as a scan..

dragging that scan back into our ordered work environment

re colour coding - or adding icon.

( I will have to investigate what a group is... )

more mixing today - but may involve a bit of SFX replacement as its a chinese cartoon series -

  • maybe we can run a poll? how many people leave there computers on 24/7?

( i never quit AF either... so thats basically 24/7 - altho the computer does sleep when its ready... )
  • You want a cached version of a Scan Set I think?
  • yes thanks! I would find it useful... basically the "library " gets full of stuff and is not so flexible in organisation.

( really must find time to try and re-organise )

also if you could have a menu item for "update all scansets now " that you could activate before lunch or leaving the studio - since some of the scans can take a while.....

must also try and make you some icons..

( search foldername , file name, exact match. bypass processing folder , and a few others for the cutomisable menu )

  • Ok. lets ditch this thread and move to the 5.5.6 beta thread, I've implemented caching. Let me know how it goes.
